SUSTAINABILITY
for you and for generations to come
At Wewood, we believe sustainable living starts by designing and choosing products that stand the test of time. By combining thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and premium materials, we create pieces meant to last a lifetime.
We hope they are loved by their owners today and passed down for future generations to cherish.
OUR APPROACH
We focus on choices that reduce waste, extend product life, and support responsible forestry and manufacturing.
The heart of our business is our solar-powered factory in Portugal. Inside Wewood’s production facility, skilled craftsmen and craftswomen work with age-old techniques alongside state-of-the-art machinery. Our new equipment brings valuable precision to the process, yet our production remains deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship, with experienced craftsmen hand-assembling and finishing each piece.
We use nearly every part of the wood we source, and any remaining offcuts are repurposed as fuel for our factory’s heating system, ensuring minimal waste.
Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we have set ambitious commitments for the future. We already work exclusively with environmentally certified wood, enabling us to produce our designs in FSC™-certified materials.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
High-quality furniture craftsmanship has always relied on the passion and dedication of skilled artisans. For centuries, master furniture makers have refined their techniques and passed them down through apprenticeships, ensuring that traditional skills endure.
Since 1964, countless apprentices have begun their careers in our factory, learning directly from experienced masters and joiners. Today, younger generations continue to play a vital role in preserving these time-honored techniques.
Our production depends on the exceptional skill of our craftspeople at every stage of the process. That’s why we believe investing in young talent is essential to safeguarding the legacy of Portuguese furniture craftsmanship.
In doing so, we are already assuring the future of our iconic designs and actively shaping the future of quality craftsmanship.
Materials that matter
Wood is at the heart of what we do. We select species for durability, beauty and the lowest possible environmental footprint. We use wood from certified forests (FSC/PEFC). Finishes are chosen for low VOCs and long-term protection to keep pieces looking better for longer.
WALNUT
Walnut’s deep, dark tone makes it an ideal wood for refined finishes. By working exclusively with the tree’s heartwood, we highlight its natural beauty through carefully applied lacquer or oil treatments. Oil not only enriches the wood’s color and enhances its surface but also improves its durability, ensuring each piece stands the test of time. As walnut is exposed to sunlight, its color gradually lightens, developing a patina with exceptional depth and character.
Qualities in Furniture Production
Walnut is considered an exclusive, highly desirable wood, prized for its deep brown color and distinctive decorative grain.
Origin
Walnut grows naturally in North America, particularly in the eastern regions.
Growth & Size
Walnut trees can reach heights of up to 30 meters and diameters of around 150 cm.
The trunk is often relatively narrow, and the pith, unsuitable for furniture production, tends to be thick. As a result, the usable yield is limited, contributing to walnut’s exclusivity.
Hardness
Walnut is a moderately hard wood. Its weight varies, but the average density is approximately 570 kg/m³.
Appearance
In its untreated state, the wood ranges from chocolate brown to purplish hues and may contain grey-brown to black mineral deposits that create striking natural patterns. Walnut’s grain is typically pronounced, sometimes slightly wavy or irregular, and can vary significantly in tone and texture even within a single tree. The wood has a firm, dense structure.
Surface Treatment
We finish our walnut with oil to enhance its beauty, improve durability, and make maintenance easier.
Over time, exposure to light naturally ages the wood, gradually brightening its color and developing a rich, evolving appearance.
OAK
Oak has long been cherished for its durability, earning its place as a timeless design material. Its enduring popularity over centuries has made it synonymous with quality, longevity, and traditional craftsmanship. Found throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, oak encompasses more than 600 species worldwide, with some trees growing up to 35 meters tall. Its lively character and pronounced grain pattern make it instantly recognizable. With a naturally high tannic acid content, oak is exceptionally strong, an ideal choice for furniture built to last.
Qualities in Furniture Production
Oak is exceptionally durable and hard-wearing, thanks in part to its naturally high tannic acid content.
Origin
Oak grows naturally across Europe, North America, and Asia, but at Wewood we use only FSC-certified oak sourced from the USA.
Growth & Size
Oak trees can reach heights of up to 35 meters and diameters of around 3 meters.
Hardness
Oak is a true hardwood. Its density varies, but the average weight is approximately 650 kg/m³.
Appearance
In its untreated state, oak has a warm brown tone. Its lively character and pronounced grain pattern come from the contrast between earlywood, marked by large, visible pores, and latewood, which has thicker walls and smaller cavities. This natural variation gives the wood its distinctive structure. Small knots are common in oak. We carefully sort all our timber: pieces with uneven coloring or natural variation are surface-treated, while the most uniform wood is finished with oil.
Surface Treatment
The oil treatments enhance the wood’s appearance, improve durability, and make maintenance easier.
Due to oak’s open cell structure, its natural texture remains visible beneath painted finishes. Over time, as the wood is exposed to light, its color gradually deepens, eventually developing a warm yellowish-brown tone.
